QUALIFICATIONS

Mr. Zylstra is a retired Deloitte Consulting principal specializing in manufacturing performance improvement utilizing Lean Manufacturing, Supply Chain Systems, customer relationship management, and ERP.  His twenty years of consulting experience with Deloitte Consulting encompassed manufacturing operations management, supply chain management, engineering, and information systems.  Kirk’s prior industry experience includes the engineering and operations functions within medical equipment and heavy equipment manufacturing.

Kirk teaches operations management and supply chain at the University of Washington Business School part time. He continues to consult and write and is currently researching the trends and supply chain implications of RFID technologies.

 RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

 Global Supply Chain Transformation

Lead the global supply chain and business process transformation of a $1 billion industrial products manufacturer.  Obtained reoccurring benefits of over $20 million per year from inventory reductions, product mix optimization, and operating cost reductions.  Guided the client team in implementing Lean Manufacturing and Theory of Constraints practices and global Advanced Planning systems (JD Edwards SNO) to reduce cycle time, implement demand pull and optimize product mix.

Assisted a manufacturer of branded camping durables with the implementation of supply chain process and information systems improvements with the implementation of JD Edwards OneWorld and SynQuest advanced planning solutions.  Improved planning and execution for the seasonal build including inventory and customer service levels.

Lean Manufacturing

Assisted an automotive equipment manufacturer improve customer service and reduce costs with the implementation of Lean Manufacturing practices.  Started with an assessment and overall plan for Lean and followed with pilot implementation and plant-wide roll-out. Lean included use of shop floor design, kanban, and cellular practices to reduce cycle time and material handling, while reducing complexity of scheduling.

Led a $250 million chemicals manufacturer through a LEAN manufacturing assessment across their entire supply chain.  Identified short-term inventory reductions of 33% being implemented over a six-month horizon.  Additional long term inventory reductions and product optimization opportunities identified.

Supported a manufacturer of medical diagnostic kits to assess operations and implement LEAN Manufacturing practices.  Client performed the assessment and successfully reduced inventory levels 30%.

Completed a review of supply chain operations for a $100 million manufacturer of recreational consumer goods. Recommended short term changes to planning with JD Edwards One World and identified improvements with the implementation of advanced planning systems.  Short term recommendations reduced raw material inventory levels 50%.

 Strategic Cost Reduction

Led the enterprise wide business, market and operations directions for a $400 million global power tool manufacturer.  Assessed product positioning, channels, and competition to form the market perspective.  Analyzed financial performance and operations to determine the business improvement potential and change initiatives.  Implemented short recommendations improving cash flow over $20 million.

 Merger Integration

Assisted a $600 million consumer goods manufacturing client with the integration of two companies into one integrated operating organization.  Building the operational and financial models and business processes to meet the acquisition performance objectives in the areas of cost reduction, plant rationalization and distribution operations.  Assessed the information systems requirements/plans and implemented seamless business processes/information flows.

 Activity Based Costing

Managed the review of a $200 million distribution company using activity driven concepts to create a customer/market segment P/L and business analysis.  Dispelled several key underling assumptions about the business and implications of costs.  Assisted with the presentation of our findings to our client’s major customer and the implications to contract negotiations.

CAREER EXPERIENCE 

Prior to joining Deloitte Consulting, Mr. Zylstra managed the production planning and control departments at a high technology medical equipment manufacturer and an industrial pump manufacturer.  In these positions he was responsible for meeting customer delivery requirements, supporting efficient manufacturing performance, minimizing inventory levels, and coordinating activities among engineering, manufacturing, and marketing.  At both of these companies, Mr. Zylstra led the implementation of fully integrated (ERP) information systems.
